Akitas value companionship but are also fiercely independent and calm, capable of taking decisive action without hesitation. The Japanese Dog Breed Akita is a powerful, dominant and loyal breed, commonly aloof with strangers, but affectionate and deeply loyal with its family. Historically, They were used by matagi for guarding and the hunting of bears.

The Akita have aggressive tendencies. Usually the aggression is toward other dogs. Akitas are alert, courageous, protective and easy to train.
The breed is known for its striking appearance and its physical and mental agility.

These guard dogs are large and robust, with a strong build and athletic ability, making them ideal for long walks and exercise. Akitas have a noble and dignified appearance that has made them popular worldwide. As a breed, Akitas are generally hardy. The two separate varieties of Akita are a pure Japanese strain, called Akita Inu or Akita-ken, and a larger mixed strain, commonly referred to as the “American Akita”. 

Apart from white, all coat colors are “urajiro,” meaning the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, under the jaw, neck, chest, belly, underside of the tail, and the inside of the legs are covered with whitish hair.
